As summer winds down and we edge closer to autumn, it's the perfect time to prepare our immune systems for the colder months. In today’s world, where viral outbreaks like Chikungunya are amplified by the media, many are searching for effective and natural ways to strengthen their immunity. With over 400 different viruses capable of causing infections – from the common cold to more serious conditions – our health is under constant pressure.
While flu vaccinations are a common choice, their effectiveness varies each year due to viral mutations. That’s where natural remedies can offer a complementary or even primary approach. Antiviral herbs such as echinacea (for those without hormone sensitivities), elderberry (sambucus), and garlic not only support immune resilience but also have scientific backing for their antiviral properties. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture, and even quantum energy medicine can further enhance your immune response when used proactively.
Understanding Your Immune System
Your immune system is the body’s frontline defence against viruses and bacteria. It is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect us from pathogens. T-cells and B-cells identify and neutralise specific threats, creating a tailored immune response. A strong immune system significantly reduces your chances of falling ill and improves your ability to recover from infections.
However, chronic stress, poor diet, sedentary habits, and lack of sleep can compromise this system. To counteract this, it's crucial to adopt healthy habits like regular movement, nourishing foods, proper rest, and stress-reducing practices such as mindfulness or breathing exercises.
Nature’s Immune Boosters
Antiviral Herbs
Some more virulent viruses enter through ACE2 receptors, which act sort of like keyholes that can open doorways into cells. Certain infectious microbes have “keys” that fit well into those ACE2 keyholes. They use their “keys” to latch tightly on to ACE2 receptors and break into healthy cells. Fortunately, specific herbs may be able to lock down ACE2 receptors and prevent invaders from barging in.
Such antiviral herbs include:
-
Chinese skullcap root – Contains flavonoids like baicalin that are known for antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activity. It helps regulate the immune response and supports respiratory health.
-
Licorice – Long used for respiratory infections and immune fatigue, it also acts on ACE2 receptors and has compounds shown to counteract hepatitis C, HIV, and influenza viruses.
-
Horse chestnut – Recognised for its anti-inflammatory benefits and venous support, it can also interfere with viral docking mechanisms at the ACE2 receptor.
-
Japanese knotweed root – Rich in resveratrol and emodin, this herb offers powerful antiviral activity and antioxidant protection, and helps block viral entry and replication.
These herbs, with their diverse plant compounds, offer a multifaceted approach to boosting defences. Their benefits go beyond viral inhibition, promoting circulation, supporting liver detoxification, and reducing inflammation.

Echinacea
One of the best-known immune enhancers, echinacea stimulates white blood cell activity. It’s particularly useful in shortening cold symptoms but should be used under guidance if you’re on medications or have hormonal imbalances.
Sambucus (Elderberry)
Rich in anthocyanins, elderberry supports respiratory health and can reduce the severity of flu symptoms. It’s most effective when taken at the onset of symptoms and is available in syrups, teas, and capsules.
Garlic
Allicin, the active compound in garlic, has strong antiviral and antibacterial effects. Consuming garlic regularly – preferably raw or lightly cooked – can reduce your chances of catching colds and flu and even help balance blood pressure and cardiovascular health.
Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C and known for enhancing immune function. Ginger, with its anti-inflammatory and antiviral qualities, can warm the system and support digestion. Turmeric contains curcumin, a powerful antioxidant with immune-modulating effects. Spinach is a nutrient powerhouse, supplying vitamin E and a host of phytonutrients that aid immune defence. Olive leaf extract has a broad antiviral range and has demonstrated activity against candida, hepatitis B, and HIV-related symptoms, while oregano oil, with its potent compounds carvacrol and thymol, acts against bacteria, fungi, and viruses and can rival antibiotics when used carefully. Lastly, sage, commonly enjoyed as a tea, is not only soothing to the throat but also contains compounds that support the body’s natural antiviral response.
Medicinal Mushrooms & Immune Balance
Turkey Tail Mushroom
Turkey tail is gaining well-deserved popularity for its potent immune-modulating effects. Rich in beta-glucans and other polysaccharides, this mushroom helps stimulate immune cells and boost antiviral defences. Studies show it enhances the production of antiviral cytokines and even has promising results in addressing viral strains like HPV—particularly when paired with reishi. It’s widely available as a powder, tea or supplement.
Reishi Mushroom
Reishi is revered in Chinese medicine for its adaptogenic qualities. It promotes balance in the immune system, helping it respond to infections without overreacting. Its key compounds—triterpenes and polysaccharides—not only reduce inflammation but also support liver health, sleep, and resilience against pathogens. Like turkey tail, it can be taken as a supplement or brewed into tea.
In addition, many medicinal mushrooms offer antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection. Beneficial medicinal mushrooms include: Ganoderma (reishi), Cordyceps, Coriolus, Umbellatus, Maitake, Shiitake, and Tremella. Some of these mushrooms (like Coriolus) have an immediate effect. Others, like reishi and cordyceps, offer more long-term support. Mushrooms such as tremella, cordyceps and reishi protect the lungs, while mushrooms like maitake and shiitake protect the digestion. Medicinal mushrooms can be taken individually, but they work even better when taken together. Include them as staples in your antiviral toolkit for overall immune regulation and support.
The Overlooked Protein That Could Tip the Balance: Galectin-3
Our immune systems are incredibly intelligent, but sometimes they can become overzealous—especially when triggered by internal “alarm signals.” One such signal is a protein called Galectin-3 (Gal-3), known to play a role in chronic inflammation and immune system imbalance. Elevated levels of Gal-3 are associated with conditions ranging from cardiovascular disease to severe viral responses and even cancer.
One natural solution that’s gaining attention is Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP). Derived from the peel of citrus fruits, MCP is currently the only known substance that effectively binds to and reduces excess Gal-3 levels. By keeping Gal-3 in check, MCP can help prevent the immune system from spiralling into overdrive—potentially reducing the risk of dangerous cytokine storms or long-term inflammatory damage.
But its benefits go far beyond Gal-3:
-
Supports your body in clearing toxins and environmental pollutants
-
Activates immune cells strategically, rather than indiscriminately
-
Offers protection to vital organs like the heart, kidneys, and liver
-
Shows promise in slowing the spread of certain cancers
-
Helps maintain immune balance, especially during seasonal transitions
-
Has demonstrated antibacterial and antiviral properties
For those building a well-rounded immunity strategy—whether you're travelling, navigating a stressful season, or simply being proactive—MCP is worth considering as part of your toolkit. It works not by overstimulating your defences, but by easing the load and helping your body respond more intelligently to what really matters.
Flu Vaccination: Know Your Options
Flu vaccines can be helpful, especially for vulnerable groups, but their effectiveness ranges from 40% to 60% depending on the strain match. In my clinical experience, I’ve observed better long-term resilience in clients who focus on strengthening their immune system naturally. Building robust natural defences can often provide broader protection.
Energy Medicine & Quantum Immunity
Modern integrative medicine is increasingly exploring the effects of energetic coherence on the immune system. Quantum medicine views the body as an energetic information field. When this field is disrupted, we may experience illness.
Techniques such as:
-
Bioresonance therapy, which detects and corrects energetic imbalances linked to pathogens or weakened organs
-
Electromagnetic field therapy, which uses low-frequency waves to stimulate cellular repair and vitality
-
Mindfulness practices and breathwork, known to reduce stress hormones that suppress immunity
-
Acupuncture, especially when used preventatively in late summer or early autumn, primes the lungs and strengthens the body's Wei Qi (defensive energy) ahead of colder months
-
Quantum Healing, a profound evolution in energy medicine, expertly harmonizing the body’s meridians and energetic pathways with precision and grace. Drawing upon principles deeply rooted in Egyptian medicine, this modality restores balance without the need for physical contact or supplemental interventions. Through subtle yet highly effective energetic realignment, Quantum Healing addresses the unique energetic imbalances of each individual, fostering holistic wellness and empowering the body’s innate capacity for self-regulation and healing.
